happy valentine’s day, overalls

today i checked my mail for the first time in over a month, and among the bills and have you seen this boy and late bills and coupons and cards from my mom and aol cds and pink interruption of service notices, i found five dollars in a valentine’s day card from my grandmother,

which was nice because i didn’t have any cash, but on the way to lunch with andy just now, i threw the five dollars out the window at two dudes on the side of the road who said they needed seven dollars to get their car fixed,

“i have a job,” the one in the overalls said, “we only need seven dollars to fix the i don’t remember what,”

and it was an ugly car but i figured, hey, if i hadn’t checked the mail i wouldn’t have had the five dollars anyway and i wouldn’t have missed it much,

and i think it’s hysterically funny that my very nice but somewhat racist grandmother would be crushed if she found out that i gave her five dollars to two “colored” men on the side of the road.
