“heavy-handed schlock!” i said to tony as we walked out of the theater. almost famous was a great story, and had the potential to overcome the sad, sad fact that cameron crowe directed it. but alas, it was typical crowe fare, really: the aforementioned heavy-handed schlock interspersed with a few brilliant one-liners and sound bites.

philip seymour hoffman was as always my very favorite, jason lee (unexpectedly) made a fantastic lead-singer-type, and patrick fugit was excellent as the fresh-faced kid. but the jokes were too obvious, the rest of the cast (icky kate hudson and wooden billy crudup) was mediocre, and the emotional and/or romance parts were not, as they say in creative writing class, earned. oh, anna paquin, you can be in better movies.

heh, i just looked around on IMDb, and patrick fugit’s first movie was called legion of fire: killer ants! heh. heh heh heh. heh.
