alison, I think it's because I'm less famous than you. (or less well-known, since famous is a bit of an overstatement in any case.) the brighter your spotlight, the more bugs will flock to it...

seriously, I do think it has less to do with the content of a site than with the number of people who visit it. the more people there are, the greater number of morons or otherwise obnoxious posters you're going to get. and, with a relatively high-profile weblog, you're bound to get some people who are just trolling. I've never had problems with trolls because the only people who know about my site are the ones who have a good reason to be there.

we take down our comment systems, apparently.

but, really, i have a hard time understanding why this has happened to me and to ryan, but not to any of the rest of us. rabi has a fairly consistent, intelligent band of people commenting on her posts. her posts are just as innocuous as mine and ryan's; none of us say anything particularly inflammatory, so that can't be it. i think that in order to figure out how to dissuade the miscreants, we have to figure out what sets them off in the first place. and, really, that's what has me stumped.

ADDENDUM: it's also happened to a two-year-old.

ahem. is this thing on?

all right then folks, since we all run separate weblogs, and we are all adept at raging meta-meme's about ourselves, here's one: how to respond to the increasing activity of "comment nazis." you've read their work. while Alison diligently deletes their often baseless, arbitrary, or personally slanderous posts, ryan has been letting them go, more or less, with appropriate witty comebacks and the occasional reprimand. it seems neither the stern road, nor the path of least resistance prevents certain folk from taking their chance to speak up, only to speak down. Now I'm all for healthy criticism, and will even tolerate the attention-seeking Sancho, but how do we dissuade the miscreants?
